Pilates Method

The Pilates Method is a series of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. These exercises are performed on a mat and on equipment that Pilates designed himself. The Method simultaneously strengthens the center, lengthens the spine, builds muscle tone, and increases flexibility, all while eliminating excess tension and strain on the joints.

The Method uniformly develops the body, corrects bad posture, lengthens and strengthens the musculature, and restores and increases physical vitality. Pilates, which also stimulates the mind and elevates the spirit, is suitable for all ages and all body types.

History

Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. It was while rehabilitating disabled people during World War I that Pilates began to create the machines and the exercise regimen that he is famous for today. Pilates used springs from hospital beds to provide resistance for strengthening the body. In the early 1920s, Pilates brought his method of physical and mental conditioning to the United States, and his work quickly gained notice and popularity with dance legends. In the past, mostly dancers, athletes, models and actors have practiced Pilates’ method. However, Pilates studios are opening up all over the country and attracting ordinary people who are discovering its benefits and are tired of the “pumping iron” and high-impact aerobics atmosphere of conventional gyms.

Equipment

The complete Pilates Method of body conditioning involves equipment exercises, in addition to mat exercises. There are several different pieces of equipment, each of which provides spring and gravity-based resistance. If you’re interested in working out on the equipment, you may either take equipment classes or private sessions.

the Mat

Mat work involves numerous exercises that are performed in various positions on the mat and may additionally utilize circles, balls or bands. Mat classes are the most affordable option we offer.

the Reformer

The Reformer is the most common piece of Pilates equipment. The spring-loaded resistance machine is one of the gentlest ways to tone muscle, strengthen joints and realign the body.

Cadillac/ Trapeze Table

The Cadillac, or trapeze table, is surrounded by a metal frame and includes a push-through bar, a trapeze bar and leg straps. The apparatus is designed to encourage the body to move more efficiently and fluently.

Wunda Chair

The dual-function Wunda chair was originally designed as both exercise equipment and furniture. Although simple in design, the Wunda chair is the most difficult to master, as many exercises require users to lift their own body weight.

Ladder Barrel

The Ladder Barrel is designed for core conditioning and stretching. Its rungs simulate a ballet barre, accommodating varying strengths and degrees of flexibility.
